Title: Barriers and perceptions of teledentistry among individuals with disabilities and their caregivers
Author: Tanaka Y, Koshino S, Matsukawa A, Ono Y
Abstract:
Aim and objectives: Teledentistry improves oral health access for individuals with special needs and nursing care requirements by overcoming mobility and cognitive barriers. We aimed to increase the implementation of teledentistry in community healthcare by identifying the factors hindering its adoption.
Design: Using a paper-based questionnaire, we investigated the factors influencing teledentistry adoption among 152 patients with disabilities who regularly visited our hospital for dental care.
Results: Our results showed limited awareness, with only 12% of participants being familiar with teledentistry. Positive impressions of teledentistry were correlated with frequent internet and smartphone use but not with age, credit card use or caregiver’s aid.
Conclusions: To enhance adoption, efforts should focus on improving digital literacy and caregiver training and promoting the benefits of teledentistry for vulnerable populations.
Key words: disabilities, internet use, smartphone use, teledentistry, survey
