Abstract:
This paper aims to report on the dental service provided by the Department of Special Care Dentistry at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in the care of patients with end stage renal disease over a five-year period. 57 patients were identified from our electronic health record (EHR) based on concurrent clinic attendance in a dedicated transplant assessment and special care dental (SCD) clinics between 2016 and 2021.
They attended a total of 327 outpatient appointments in the Department of Special Care Dentistry over the study period. 51% of patients were referred to SCD because they did not have an NHS dentist. 26% of patients were referred because their case was deemed to be too complex for primary care dentistry. Referral to SCD as part of the pre-transplant evaluation serves to identify and resolve significant dental issues to prevent infectious complications post-transplant. Dental assessment and intervention can be part of a holistic approach to modify comorbidities and lifestyle factors prior to transplantation. A close working relationship between renal and dental services improves the quality of care for patients who have significant barriers in accessing routine dental care.
