Title: Orofacial manifestations and dental care considerations in Huntington’s disease: a narrative reviewSickle cell update: the patient perspective

Abstract:
Huntington’s disease (HD) is a progressive, autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder characterised by motor, cognitive and psychiatric decline. Individuals with HD face increasing challenges in maintaining oral health due to involuntary movements, impaired coordination, cognitive deterioration and significant psychiatric and mental health manifestations, including depression, anxiety, apathy and behavioural dysregulation. These factors complicate both daily oral hygiene and the provision of safe and effective dental care. This narrative review presents an updated synthesis of the literature related to the oral health manifestations of HD and their implications for dental management within special care dentistry (SCD).
A comprehensive search of scientific databases and clinical guidelines was undertaken, focusing on orofacial complications, oral hygiene challenges and recommended management approaches across the disease trajectory. Findings indicate a high prevalence of dysphagia, bruxism, drooling, oral trauma and nutritional compromise in this population. Preventive care strategies, communication adaptations and caregiver involvement are critical to supporting oral health. Recent evidence highlights the benefits of tailored oral hygiene tools, sedation protocols for advanced cases and multidisciplinary care models that prioritise patient comfort and autonomy.
Despite these advances, specific clinical guidelines for dental care in individuals with HD remain limited. This review advocates for increased awareness, interprofessional collaboration and the development of evidence-based protocols to support ethical and effective dental care for people living with Huntington’s disease.
