Title: Sickle cell update: the patient perspective

Abstract:
This paper focuses on the dental journey of sickle cell patients and the challenges encountered with accessing dental care. This paper is a guide for qualified dentists who want to refresh on the dental implications of sickle cell disease. A patient focus group with two participants was carried out with the Sickle Cell Society (SCS) using a semi structured interview format. Both participants suffered from sickle cell disease. The interview was conducted virtually via an online platform with the participants individually. Both participants consented for this interview and written consent forms were reviewed and completed by the author.
The objectives were to:
- Review feedback from sickle cell disease patients on the quality of dental care they receive in primary care;
- Evaluate the impact of socioeconomic factors in the sickle cell community and how this has affected their health related quality of life (HRQOL); and
- Identify protocols that can be implemented for the primary care management and criteria for secondary care referral of sickle cell patients.
